Senior Technical Manager Cathy Rockwell, P.E., and Project Engineer Kayla Hadley, P.E., have been recognized by industry associations for their leadership and commitment to the environmental profession.
The LSP Association (LSPA) presented Rockwell with the LSPA’s Contribution to the Practice Award during its September 14 member meeting. She was recognized alongside industry colleague Marilyn Wade, P.E., a managing engineer for Brown and Caldwell, for their joint efforts spearheading the association’s Climate Change Subcommittee. A staple of LSPA’s Technical Practices committee, the Climate Change Subcommittee promotes continued learning around the science, best practices, and regulatory landscape at the intersection of site remediation and climate issues. Rockwell and her co-chair lead biweekly calls with fellow committee members to discuss emerging climate considerations impacting cleanup sites.
Under the leadership of Rockwell and Wade, LSPA’s Climate Change Subcommittee has partnered with Ken Marra, P.E., of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection to draft amendments to the Massachusetts Contingency Plan, implementing climate vulnerability assessments at 21E sites throughout Massachusetts. The amendments direct responsible parties to identify and assess foreseeable climate impacts that may affect the permanency and protectiveness of the cleanup at vulnerable sites, and to take reasonable measures to reduce vulnerabilities. The Climate Change Subcommittee is contributing guidance documents, including a Q&A for implementation, evaluation flowchart, vulnerability assessment checklist, and an index of tools and resources for site managers.
Hadley is the recipient of a 2021 EBC Ascending Leader Award. Given annually by the Environmental Business Council of New England, the program recognizes young professionals in the energy and environmental sectors demonstrating exceptional leadership and industry involvement early in their careers. She was nominated by her supervisor, Sam Olney, P.G.
Her nomination cites technical and professional leadership both within Woodard & Curran and in Hadley’s involvement with industry organizations. She serves as an internal resource for complex PFAS sites, making substantial contributions to site characterization, remedy design, and management on these projects. Her colleagues point to her experience in data management, evaluation, and visualization as critical factors in developing best-fit remediation programs for clients. Hadley has also been an active contributor to internal efforts to improve and streamline the way we manage and present data.
In addition to EBC Hadley is active in numerous industry organizations, including the Licensed Site Professionals Association and the Society of American Military Professional Engineers; and served as the first president of the University of New Hampshire (UNH) Environment and Water Resources Institute. She presented both poster and platform presentations at the 2020 UMass Soils Conference about the utilization of remote telemetry for monitoring LNAPL potential migration. Hadley has presented her experiences as a young environmental professional to students at UNH, Northeastern University, and Tufts University.
