Community Development: A Holistic Approach to Helping Renew, Grow, and Endure

Daniel Windsor leads Woodard & Curran’s Urban Revitalization Practice with more than 16 years of experience in community planning and development, land use planning, and policy alignment for public and private clients. His focus is aimed at balancing economic revitalization and community development with responsible growth and commitment to the environment.

Infrastructure does not exist in a vacuum and we set out to ask: how can our infrastructure do more? Can that stormwater mitigation project be a new community park? Can pipe replacement be combined with a new safer active street? Can we daylight that stream to create a new resilient reimagined downtown destination? As consultants, when we address your infrastructure projects as part of a greater vision for your community, we can better help our clients achieve their social, environmental, and financial goals.

Woodard & Curran has long aided our municipal clients in achieving their infrastructural and environmental goals. The interdisciplinary nature of our firm has made it possible to build lasting relationships and serve communities of all sizes on multiple fronts. Our new Urban Revitalization service line offers us a fresh framework for these projects — a holistic approach that integrates our existing science and engineering resources with an element of urban planning and long-range visioning.

A Values-Guided Approach

Woodard & Curran’s values and commitment to people and the environment create a unique approach to urban revitalization that brings together a range of expertise and visionaries to balance redevelopment responsibly. We embrace cross-pollination between our business units and service lines, and we already provide many of our clients with diverse services that enhance the communities we serve in connected ways. Our Urban Revitalization service provides us an avenue to better coordinate these efforts in a holistic and values-oriented approach to community planning.

Across the country, Woodard & Curran is entrenched in capital projects that uphold our core values of clean water, equity, resiliency, and environmental stewardship. By partnering with progressive communities that share these values, we can plan and package projects that help create and advance thriving and sustaining communities while saving our clients time, effort, and cost.

Unlocking Funding

It has been an incredibly challenging year for municipal governments on many fronts. On top of that, the accessibility of public outdoor spaces has become critical to the health and well-being of people in all types of communities. As cities and towns throughout the U.S. contend with the economic reality brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, budget and value are at the forefront of conversations around capital investments.

It’s no surprise that a holistic, coordinated, and interdisciplinary approaching to capital projects is less expensive than designing and building standalone infrastructure or community enhancements. Proper recession planning now can set your community up for success and maximize your long-term return on investment.

Of special concern to municipalities is maximizing funding opportunities. Our approach is to broaden the impact of our infrastructure to include social, economic and environmental benefits to unlock a wider range of funding and enable meaningful change across communities. What further differentiates Woodard & Curran’s Urban Revitalization program is our in-house funding team. We work on behalf of our clients to identify funding opportunities, covering everything from underground infrastructure to park improvements, through planning to implementation.

Our Urban Revitalization practice allows us to make your community’s investments cover more ground. With a holistic approach, we can coordinate efforts to improve infrastructure functionality and increase community benefit. Get in touch with us today to discuss how we can get your community’s infrastructure to do more and bring about positive, transformative change.
