Protecting communities through integrated stormwater projects
Every region of the United States has unique challenges regarding stormwater management that boils down to issues around quality and quantity. The changing climate is causing more frequent severe storms, atypical weather patterns, extended droughts, and sea level rise, driving up the cost of recovering from such natural disasters well into the billions of dollars annually. Meanwhile, stormwater runoff remains the largest source of water pollution, threatening public health and safety, recreation, and business. Our flood mitigation and stormwater experts have a deep understanding of the issues that our public and private clients face, including regulatory pressures, and are positioned to help design integrated stormwater management projects that protect our natural and built environments and improve community resiliency.
According to the National Centers for Environmental Information, the United States has sustained 400 weather and climate disasters since 1980, with the total cost of recovery as of 2024, exceeding $2.785 trillion. Many of these events are due to severe storms and flooding, which impact both coastal and inland communities. Building on our mission, We deploy the latest climate, hydrologic and hydraulic modeling technology to help our communities and industry partners understand flood vulnerabilities and develop strategic solutions that mitigate flooding, collect, store, and convey stormwater, and protect critical infrastructure. Our goal is to support our clients effort to mitigate risk, minimize damage, maintain business continuity, and safeguard lives.
Weather patterns across the country are out of our control, but managing stormwater runoff is something we can do to protect water quality. Our stormwater experts are constantly tracking the latest state and federal regulatory changes, as well as applied science and engineering solutions, to implement effective multi-beneficial projects that protect our watersheds. We work collaboratively with clients to design and implement stormwater treatment and reuse projects that combine a mix of green and gray infrastructure approaches with proven results. These efforts not only protect source water for drinking water utilities, but ensure communities can enjoy recreational and commercial activities, such as swimming, paddle sports, fishing, or harvesting shellfish without risking public health due to polluted waterways.
Woodard & Curran has been a great partner to Valley Water and their innovative design provides needed flood protection, as well as creates beneficial habitats and minimizes impacts to residents and businesses.
