Understanding the EPA Draft Risk Assessment on PFAS in Biosolids

EPA released its “Draft Sewage Sludge Risk Assessment for Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) and Perfluorooctane Sulfonic Acid (PFOS)”, in January of 2025. The draft assessment offers a preliminary evaluation of the potential human health and environmental risks associated with beneficial reuse, surface disposal, and incineration of biosolids and sewage sludge containing PFOA and PFOS. This brief report offers recommendations for how to interpret the assessment and what action to take in light of its conclusions.
